Abstract
This study aims to determine whether there is a significant improvement in the mastery of content word of second semester students of English Study Program IAIN Fattahul Muluk Papua after the implementation of extensive reading learning and to find out the extent of improvement in each category of content word, so it can be known which category has the most improved. This study used a pre-experimental design using descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistical analysis such as Paired Sample T-Test to make a hypothesis decision. In this study only took one class, namely the experimental class with the number of research subjects as many as 14 second semester students. The research instrument used to collect data was a pre-test and post-test consisting of 60 questions about verbs, nouns, adverbs and adjectives. The results showed that: (1) Ha of this study is accepted based on the results of paired sample t-test obtained sig.2 tailed value 0.000 < 0.05, meaning that there is a significant increase in students' content word mastery; (2) the increase in the mean value from pre-test to post-test indicates that each category of content word has improve after being given the treatment and the nouns category getting the most improvement based on the N-Gain value. It can be concluded students’ must be aware to improve their content word mastery through extensive reading since the importance of content word in language learning.
