Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the existence of social reality in the discourse contained in a news text by raising the political issue of corruption cases committed by the governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe. This study departs from an assumption that the media tend to offer news or stories that make their readers believe which there was a role of journalist as news makers in constructing the discourse contained in the news. This paper puts forward a qualitative method with a critical discourse analysis approach using the Teun Van Djik model by collecting data by observing the text of four news stories from Jakarta Globe, The Jakarta Post and Cenderawasih Pos news portal. In addition, This paper finds that there was a message that has a purpose or meaning that was constructed in the news text. The Jakarta Globe, The Jakarta Post, and Cenderawasih Pos, as dominant mass media platforms with extensive access to public discourse, can influence the shaping of public opinions regarding political issues in Papua. This is because the media holds the power to determine both positive and negative images of individuals or groups. However, it's important to note that their interpretations of political issues related to Lukas Enembe might be confined to presenting factual information gathered from the field, with the media considering the issues they raise as sources of their influence in constructing discourse. The findings of this study depict Lukas Enembe as an intellectual figure closely associated with upholding Papuan culture and national aspirations through media, culture, and resource-based problem-solving, gaining public trust. His dedication to preserving and promoting Papuan culture strengthens community bonds, influences perceptions, and drives community involvement in his case through the intricate interplay of power and access. Nevertheless, the coverage of his case cannot be disregarded, as numerous news platforms report on the corruption allegations he faces, prompting questions about his leadership. The implication of this writing is that it highlights the presence of social reality within the discourse presented in news texts, with a specific focus on the political issue of corruption involving the Governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe. It sheds light on the power of the media and its framing in shaping public opinions and perspectives on political issues in Papua.formation of public opinions and perspectives regarding political issues in Papua.
