Abstract

In higher education, English learning methods using ESP (English for Specific Purposes) are often underused. One of the factors causing this is the lack of lesson preparation, which results in learning that is less relevant to the competencies to be achieved. Therefore, a learning plan is needed that begins with assessing students' needs to learn English with specific targets. This study aimed to determine the needs of students in English at the Faculty of Tarbiyah, IAIN Fattahul Muluk Papua. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study research design. The object of this research is the students of the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education (PGMI) study program at the Faculty of Tarbiyah. The researcher took 10 students as respondents. The data collection techniques used were interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used in this research was qualitative data analysis, with the following steps: data reduction, data display, and coclusion drawing or verification. PGMI students need English teaching in accordance with their majors so that later they can be applied in accordance with what has been learned during lectures. Speaking skills are a priority for most PGMI students. Mastery of speaking skills is needed to be applied in the real world. Besides that, in the learning needs found by students, the need for English learning methods shows that the methods are varied. PGMI students need more specific English, namely English for Specific Purposes (ESP), which is adjusted to the material that will support them in the future.
